Renowned ocean rower Billy Taylor is set to embark on a ground-breaking expedition: the first-ever continent-to-continent row across the Indian Ocean.

The 5,500-mile journey from Australia to Africa aims to raise £500,000 for vital mental health causes and scientific research. With Starlink technology onboard, the voyage will be broadcast live from the water, allowing audiences worldwide to follow the journey in real time.

    This ambitious challenge will support:

    • Race Against Dementia (RAD): Pioneering dementia research to fast-track a cure.
    • Rock2Recovery (R2R): Providing life-changing mental health support to veterans and emergency service personnel.

Alongside his team, Monkey Fist Adventures, Billy’s mission also supports cutting-edge microplastics research with Michigan University and will engage over 3,000 schools through Learn Live UK, inspiring the next generation.

A Mission Driven by Purpose and Resilience

Billy Taylor, a veteran ocean rower embarking on his sixth challenge, shared his motivation: “Ocean rowing has the power to transform lives. This challenge is about more than crossing an ocean—it’s about using that platform to raise awareness and funds for causes that desperately need support. I believe we can all do something to make the world a better place, no matter how small.”

His passion for supporting mental health charities was sparked at a previous event where he encountered the staggering prevalence of dementia and mental health issues.

“It was shocking to learn that 1 in 3 people born today will die from dementia,” Billy says. “That means many of those closest to me may face its devastating impact. Mental health is another cause close to my heart—having seen colleagues and loved ones struggle, it’s clear that more must be done to provide support and destigmatise these issues.”

    The Row Ahead

Preparing for such a monumental challenge involves meticulous logistics, crew selection, boat maintenance, physical training, and media outreach. But for Billy, the lure of the ocean outweighs the demands: “I’m looking forward to being on the water, away from the noise of modern life. Out there, everything quiets down—it’s just eating, sleeping, and rowing with a crew who’ve got your back. No distractions, just bliss.”

The Indian Ocean Challenge is supported by lead sponsor Evolution Capital, a leading corporate finance advisory firm. Evolution Capital, known for its expertise in guiding M&A transactions, sees the values that underpin Taylor’s challenge—resilience, precision, and unwavering focus—as perfectly aligned with their own. “We’re thrilled to support Billy in this journey,” commented EC’s CEO Nigel Cook. “Our goal is to not only help raise critical funds for RAD and R2R, but to also highlight the power of determination and vision in achieving the extraordinary.”
