WritersMosaic and the Poetry Translation Centre collaborate with the Eccles Centre and Un Nuevo Sol to present The Forensic and the Fantastic: Latinx poets at the British Library with AKOLÁ TAMBÓ AMANDA VILANOVA, GABY SAMBUCCETTI and OSCAR GUARDIOLA-RIVERA

From 7-9 pm on Tuesday 09 July 2024 at the Pigott Theatre, The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London, NW1 2DB the WritersMosaic and the Poetry Translation Centre are collaborating with the Eccles Centre and Un Nuevo Sol to present an evening of Latinx poetry, accompanied by multimedia performances and Afro-Colombian music. Hosted by writer Amanda Vilanova, poets will use English, Spanish, Portuguese and Quechua to explore translation between cultures and bring the living poetry of Latin America to the British Library in London. Using the principle of haymay, a Quechua word for collaboration, musicians Akolá Tambó will dialogue with poets Oscar Guardiola-Rivera and Gaby Sambuccetti, while the Latinx creatives of Un Nuevo Sol bring performance and video installations to their live acts of translation.

Also presenting four poems in translation will be a group of Latinx creatives including, Marina Sanchez, Raúl Cisneros, Suene Honorato, Tania Montenegro, José Buera, Alba Frederick, Lester Gómez Medina and Sim Pereira-Madder. This group came together for a series of Poetry Translation Centre workshops earlier in 2024, where they translated poems from Spanish, Portuguese and Quechua into Engish. Furthermore, they translated an English poem by Latinx poet Marina Sánchez into Spanish for the first time. The poems cover a range of subjects from a child’s eye view on political violence to the tragedy of language loss. The group will be using sound, video and performance to bring their translations to life, demonstrating the breath of contemporary Latinx poetry.
