Thank you, Cupid in a van: Valentine’s Day flower orders are going to be left late again

New data from same-day delivery business Gophr shows that romantics are increasingly leaving it to the last minute to order flowers for Valentine’s Day.

Based on an analysis of last years’ order data, Gophr expects to receive over fives times as many same day delivery flower orders from its trade customers on 14th February vs orders received on the previous day.

Additionally, Gophr also revealed that 78% of all flower orders are booked for the same day, with the latest delivery on last year’s Valentine’s Day being 11pm – a true last minute cupid!

Gophr number crunchers have also analysed the delivery options offered by the UK’s top 25 florists. Eleven of them (Amarante Flowers, Appleyard Flowers, Bloom, eflorist, Floom, Floward, Flowers Box, Flowerbx, Flower Station, Interflora and Moyses Stevens) are now giving some customers the choice of same-day delivery.

And while many of these florists only offer this service in London, it is still up significantly from the seven that offered same-day delivery in 2024, a sign that convenience is increasingly popular.

Graham Smith, strategic account director at Gophr, commented: “Valentine’s Day is, by a wide margin, florists’ biggest day of the year. But shoppers are more time-poor and/or forgetful than ever. Luckily, florists are quite literally riding to the rescue and enabling romantic gestures with a broader range of delivery options, including same day, and even same hour – we’ve delivered flowers in as little as 20 mins last year”

Oleksandra Kosharna, director of Floritta Flowers London, also commented: “Gophr’s same-day delivery service has been a lifesaver for us, especially during peak times like Valentine’s Day. The flexibility and reliability ensure that even last-minute orders reach our customers on time, making it easier for us to meet demand”.

Gophr’s Valentine’s Day analysis has also highlighted a ‘cost-of-loving crisis’ that has seen the price of many Valentine’s Day gifts and other romantic products and services rise in the lead-up to this year’s big day:

    • A 12-pack of Durex Originals Extra Safe Condoms Regular Fit from Superdrug has increased from £10.99 in 2024 to £11.49 – almost an extra five pence per condom!
    • A box of Lindor Assorted Chocolates from Lindt (200g) has gone from an average price of £5.82 in Jan 2024 to £7.13 in 2025
    • The average cost of weddings taking place in 2025 has increased to £25,625, a jump of 3.7% from the 2024 figure of £24,710.
    • Eating out at a restaurant cost 20% more in 2024 YoY and is set to rise even higher this year.

Smith adds: “The ‘cost-of-romance’ is a very real concern for UK consumers, especially on Valentine’s Day. With more pressure than ever on our wallets, more expensive romantic gestures might start to slip by the wayside.

“That makes it even more important that the businesses who rely on this time, florists most notably, step up their game and give consumers what they need to keep romance alive!”
