As pressure mounts for school caterers to reach stricter guidelines on salt and sugar, local councils are starting to make changes to menus and the products they offer school children in a bid to make mealtimes healthier.
Award winning, 100% natural, no added sugar ketchup brand, Real Good Ketchup, has now joined LACA – the school food people – to help support caterers in reaching their salt and sugar reduction targets for school children at mealtimes.
With 80% less salt than regular sauces, Real Good Ketchup is addressing both sugar and salt reduction, whilst maintaining a natural taste that children love.
When it comes to healthy eating and school dinners, the pressure is certainly on for school caterers. As guidelines on salt and sugar become more important, increasing numbers of caterers are looking to make simple mealtime switches that allow them to lower the amounts of salt and sugar on children’s plates.
“We are seeing an increase in the number of schools changing menus to reduce sugar and salt,” explains Liz Jones, founder of Real Good Ketchup. “Amongst others, Waltham Forest and Tower Hamlets are now serving our ketchup with another five Council caterers introducing Real Good Ketchup to their menus this term.”
“By working with LACA members Real Good Ketchup removes that extra sugar cube off the plate for school children at mealtimes”  Liz adds “As a team, we have over 20 years’ experience in children’s food and ensure that our production is totally nut free and all ingredients are free from the top 14 listed food allergens .”
LACA was established in 1990 and is the leading professional body representing over 1000 members drawn from across the school food sector representing public sector and private contract caterers and suppliers to schools.
Real Good Ketchup is made in the UK using natural, plant-based ingredients, is 14 allergen free and boasts 75% less sugar and 80% less salt than other leading brands. It also received a Great Taste Award in 2024 and World Food Innovation Award for Best Children’s Product. Available in both child friendly recyclable table top squeezies and bulk recyclable catering jars.
