Millions of Brits love to boast about their savvy savings – but scoring a super-steal still brings us the most joy. A study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Hive, the UK’s leading connected smart home brand, found that 49% of Brits feel immense joy from scoring savings on big-ticket items, like smart home tech, cars and designer gear.

And whilst these thrifty finds make 52% of Brits feel happy and proud, 35% of us admit that the best part of saving money is telling others about it. This is especially true for 50% of Gen Z and Millennials, where the thrill of sharing savings is the best part of getting a deal, compared to 25% of older generations.

Furthermore, 35% of Brits get the greatest satisfaction from sharing their smart spends with friends. In fact, more than 1 in 10 Brits say they find the most pleasure in telling a neighbour about their savvy savings—likely in an effort to keep up with the Joneses!

When it comes to what Brits love to brag about, top choices include negotiating lower bills, scoring travel deals, and saving through bulk purchases. Research also revealed we take pleasure in sharing stories of great offers on energy-efficient appliances, discounted designer clothing, and solar panels for long-term savings.

Regionally, the love for boasting varies, as seen on Hive’s interactive map which shows the savviest spenders across the UK. 53% of Londoners are particularly fond of sharing their financial triumphs, while 38% of Scots and 36% of Welsh residents are more modest about their money-saving wins.

In fact, 54% of Brits have actively made efforts to outsmart their friends or neighbours by landing better deals. This drive for financial savviness is especially pronounced among younger generations: 71% of Gen Z and Millennials report trying to one-up their peers in securing advantageous offers.

To help more Brits make savvy savings on their energy bills, Hive has partnered with Sunsave, an innovative solar subscription provider, that allows homeowners to save on their energy bills with solar without spending thousands of pounds upfront.

“Hive is all about empowering people to make smart home decisions that drive long-term savings and help the environment,” said Susan Wells, Director, EV and Solar at Hive. “Our eco-tech products, like smart thermostats and energy-efficient lighting, help customers save money by reducing energy consumption, while also benefiting the planet.”

According to the research, 63% of Brits say they get the most satisfaction from finding a great deal or discount on something they were already planning to buy. And when those savings are paired with eco-friendly choices, the feel-good factor grows even stronger. 61% of Brits say they feel even happier when their savings also help the environment.

Younger Brits are leading the way in driving sustainability, with 54% of Gen Z and Millennials looking to invest in solutions like solar panels. For them, saving money and supporting the environment go hand in hand, as they increasingly align their financial goals with eco-friendly choices.

It’s not just eco-friendly purchases that Brits are looking to save on; top money-saving strategies such as buying in bulk (38%), negotiating bills (36%), purchasing discounted or off-season clothing (32%), and investing in energy-efficient appliances (24%) are also high on the list.

“Brits love finding a great deal on things they already plan to buy, and it’s even more rewarding when those savings come with a positive environmental impact.” Susan Wells adds, “Savvy, smart and sustainable savings are at the core of what we offer.”

Hive is on a mission to help make low carbon technology simple and affordable. For example, Hive customers can cut their electricity bill by up to 92%, with the Hive Solar Saver energy offer – ensuring they have the smartest savings to share.
