Digital networking has become an essential element for the success of business and individual promotion. Since its creation in 2003, LinkedIn has become a premier platform for professionals looking to connect, share insights, and find new opportunities, as well as businesses promoting their companies and looking for new employees.

However, many users struggle to gain traction on their profiles despite their best efforts. Luckily, Beth Romer, Owner and Founder of L&L Collective has identified common pitfalls that hinder your LinkedIn success and what to do instead to become a successful LinkedIn marketer, whether it be for yourself or your business!

Sharing Thoughts That Aren’t Actually Yours

Sharing thought leadership that isn’t actually yours can actually hurt your profile. A lot of people are taking other peoples ideas, thoughts, etc. and posting them because they agree with them but aren’t offering anything additional to the subject. If you want to stand out you need to be authentic. People want to hear from YOU.

Using AI to Write Your Posts

Using AI to write your posts vs using AI to edit your thoughts. It is so obvious when someone says “white me a post on executive leadership.” AI is a beautiful tool but it needs to be used ethically. Write your thoughts, then have AI proof your words. Not the other way around.

    Lack of a Complete Profile

A partially completed LinkedIn profile significantly deters potential connections and opportunities. Ensure every section of your profile, from your headline and summary to your work experience and skills, is filled out comprehensively. A complete profile showcases your professionalism and boosts your visibility in LinkedIn search results.

    Inconsistent Posting & Engagement

Consistency is essential on LinkedIn. Many users fail to post regularly or engage with their network, decreasing visibility. Aim to post valuable content and insights at least once a week and actively engage with your connections’ posts by liking, commenting, and sharing. This consistent activity keeps you on the radar of your network and the LinkedIn algorithm.

    Not Utilizing Keywords Effectively

Keywords are crucial for being found on LinkedIn. Without proper keyword optimization in your profile and posts, you may not appear in relevant searches. Identify keywords related to your industry, skills, and job role and integrate them naturally throughout your profile and content to improve your discoverability.

    Ignoring the Power of Recommendations

Recommendations act as testimonials of your skills and work ethic. Many users overlook the importance of gathering and giving recommendations. Regularly request recommendations from colleagues, clients, and supervisors, and be generous in providing them to others. These endorsements will significantly enhance your credibility and attractiveness to potential connections and employers.

    Neglecting LinkedIn Analytics

LinkedIn provides powerful analytics tools to help you understand your profile’s performance. Many users forget to review these insights, missing opportunities to refine their strategy. Regularly check your profile views, post engagement, and search appearances to identify what’s working and needs improvement. Use this data to inform your content strategy and engagement practices.

Avoiding these common mistakes will significantly boost your LinkedIn presence and attract more traffic to your profile. Remember, success on LinkedIn requires a strategic approach, consistent effort, and a willingness to engage with your professional network.
