England’s most prolific areas for speeding offences have been revealed and the area covered by the Metropolitan Police Service has the highest number of offences by a considerable distance.

The data which has been compiled by motoring experts at Quotezone.co.uk reveals that just under one in ten London drivers are being issued a speeding fine, with one road in NW11 being particularly notorious for catching motorists.

The data was gathered through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests sent to each of the 39 territorial police forces across England, with 29 forces responding.

This was then compiled by analysts at Quotezone to reveal the areas with the most offenders, and which speed cameras in particular manage to catch the most lawbreakers.

The Metropolitan Police recorded a huge 757,375 offences during the 2023/24 financial year, with speed cameras on the A406 near the junction with Western Avenue NW11 being kept busiest.

Whilst it may not seem unusual that London would come out on top due to a much larger population size, when calculating the number of offences per capita, London still ranks highly, coming in at fifth place behind Warwickshire, Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire and West Mercia.

In second place for the total number of offences came West Yorkshire, recording 228,139 altogether. Somewhat surprisingly in third place came Warwickshire, with a total of 210,393 offences. Only the City of London has a smaller territorial police force than Warwickshire.

Completing the top five for the most speeding offences recorded during the 2023/24 financial year is the area served by Greater Manchester Police in fourth place with 166,436 offences, whilst West Mercia rounds off the top five with 113,433 offences.

The areas immediately surrounding London fared much better, with only the Essex Police area featuring in the top 10 in a list dominated by Northern areas.

Top 10 areas of England with the most speeding offences

    Police Force Total Offences
    Metropolitan Police 757,375
    West Yorkshire 228,139
    Warwickshire 210,393
    Greater Manchester Police 166,436
    West Mercia 113,433
    Lincolnshire 94,987
    Essex 92,818
    Derbyshire 85,265
    West Midlands 78,482
    South Yorkshire 73,976

Commenting on the data, Quotezone CEO and car insurance expert Greg Wilson says: “With such a high number of offences across different areas of the country it’s clear that speeding is still very much an issue that’s not going away anytime soon.

“Aside from any safety concerns, being caught speeding could also have financial implications, from fines, to penalty points and even court appearances.  Research suggests that just three points could raise your car insurance premium by an average of 5%. While six penalty points could push the cost of insurance up by an average of 25%.

“At a time when people may be struggling financially with escalating costs all around them – this additional hike in car insurance is the last thing anyone needs.

“It’s important for drivers to be safe, slow down and beware of the top ten regions prone to speeding tickets.”
