1. What cookies are

Cookies are small files, and similar browser storage, saved on your device when you visit a website. They let a site remember things such as whether you are signed in, or count how many people read a story.

2. Essential cookies (always on)

These are needed for the site to work and cannot be switched off. Without them you could not sign in or submit a story.

• Sign-in and session storage, so you stay logged in as you move around the site;
• Security and anti-abuse checks on sign-in, payment and submission;
• Your saved draft and editor settings while you are writing;
• A record of the cookie choice you make here, so we do not keep asking.

3. Optional cookies (your choice)

These only run if you accept them:

• Audience measurement: an anonymous visitor reference so we can count page views and see which stories and links are popular;
• Device and referrer information, so we know whether readers arrive on a phone, tablet or computer, and from where.

This information is aggregated for our own editorial reporting. We do not sell it, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.

4. Third parties

Some services we rely on set their own cookies when you use them: our payment provider during checkout, and embedded content such as maps or videos inside a story. Advertising partners may set cookies where advertising is shown. Their use of cookies is governed by their own policies.
