WHAT A MUG!

Paralympian Ellie Simmonds says ‘Cheers’ to half-price electricity with PeakSave this summer

  • British Gas gives its customers more ways to save as it extends PeakSave half-price electricity offer to 9am-5pm every Sunday this summer and on two Super Saturdays
  • Summer of sport powering nation’s pride, with 85% feeling proud while watching the Olympics, Paralympics, Wimbledon and other sports
  • Ellie Simmonds and Gogglebox partner, Richie Anderson, settle in to all the sporting action with giant mugs and towers of biscuits

Brits can settle into TV sporting action and all the tea to power them through, as British Gas extends its PeakSave offer this summer. Every Sunday this summer and on two Super Saturdays (3rd August and 7th September) from 9am-5pm, those signed up to PeakSave can use electricity for half the price, as British Gas celebrates its partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

This comes as new research reveals the nation’s British pride is surging as the summer of sport gets into full swing and the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics fast approaches. 85% of the nation will feel proud to be British while watching sport, and 62% say pride in being British will be higher when taking in all the sport on the telly than at any other time of the year.

An excited 72% can’t wait to tune into this year’s Olympics and Paralympics action, perhaps hoping for a repeat of the iconic London 2012 ‘Super Saturday’ moment, which induces feelings of pride (26%), happiness (19%) and nostalgia (12%) for the nation.

Nearly two thirds (63%) say watching sport on TV is fun with others. The social aspect is one of our favourite things about the summer of sport, with over half (52%) saying the atmosphere is better when watching with others; 45% feeling elated at the shared experience of seeing a win together; 33% loving seeing other’s reactions; and 29% sharing refreshments with family and friends.

The majority (90%) will be using the kettle to make hot drinks to power them through the Games, and 46% say they will be drinking many cups of tea while watching the summer of sport on TV this summer. In fact, more than one in 20 Brits say they’ll be drinking at least six cups of tea between 9am and 5pm.

‘TV pickup’ – when there’s a break in a popular television event and viewers unwittingly cause a surge in electricity – will no doubt be sweeping the nation, as we collectively boil the kettle this summer. During the England v Serbia game of the Euros, British Gas saw a 2% increase before kick-off and 3% after the last whistle – this may seem small, but is equivalent to over a million kettles all being boiled at the same time!

Catherine O’Kelly, managing director of British Gas Energy said: “Our PeakSave half price electricity offer is already helping our customers to save money, while also shifting usage away from peak times. Tea and telly are a match made in heaven so we’re incredibly excited to launch this offer, and help the nation kick back with the sporting action and a cuppa in hand – knowing that they’ll be getting more for less all summer.”

O’Kelly continued: “Whether we’re cheering with Lewis Hamilton or biting our nails during England penalties, the summer of sport brings the nation together. We’ll all be supporting our British athletes in Paris along with Ellie and Richie, and we know they’ll do us proud. We’re all hoping for big successes like the unforgettable Super Saturday of London 2012, but our results show that we’ll be bursting with pride whatever happens.”

To celebrate the PeakSave offer, Paralympian and national treasure Ellie Simmonds, along with her Gogglebox partner Richie Anderson, have been toasting with mugs of Olympic proportions.

Ellie Simmonds added: “Watching sport on the sofa is way more nerve-wracking than competing! One thing I need to power me through being a spectator is tea – and lots of it. British Gas have long been huge supporters of ParalympicsGB and Team GB, and now they’re extending that support to all the home fans with their half price PeakSave deal.”
