Nevermore - Edgar Allan Poe Musical to Haunt Charing Cross Theatre in 2027

The cult hit musical Nevermore – The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe is set to make its return to London’s stage for a limited season, at Charing Cross Theatre from Monday 19 July to Saturday 9 October 2027.

Written, composed and directed by Jonathan Christenson, Artistic Director of Catalyst Theatre, Nevermore explores the extraordinary life and imagination of one of literature’s most celebrated gothic writers, Edgar Allan Poe. The show blends biography, fantasy, music and echoes of Poe’s work to explore the man behind some of the darkest stories in literature, including 'The Raven', 'The Tell-Tale Heart', 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and 'The Pit and the Pendulum'.

Set one rainy night in Richmond, Virginia, the story follows Poe as he boards a steamship bound for New York. He will never arrive. Instead, the voyage turns into a dive through memory and imagination, exploring a life of ambition, grief, love and loss, and ends with the discovery that his darkest story was his own.

Originally created by the Canadian company Catalyst Theatre in Edmonton, Nevermore has been presented all over Canada and Internationally. The production appeared at the Barbican for London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) and in 2015 it ran Off-Broadway at New York’s New World Stages, where it received three Lucille Lortel Award nominations, including Outstanding Musical.

Bringing Poe’s gothic imagination back to the London stage

Speaking about bringing the production back to London, producer M. Kilburg Reedy said, “I first produced Nevermore Off-Broadway in 2015, so it’s wonderful to be returning to the piece and bringing it to Charing Cross Theatre. Nevermore has been called ‘haunting’ and it’s fair to say that I have been ‘haunted’ by Jonathan’s singular creation – a musical play that is visually stunning, deeply theatrical and full of wit and darkness.”

Christenson adds, ‘Edgar Allan Poe turned his own tortured life into some of the most macabre stories and poems ever written and it’s this intriguing relationship between his life and his work that inspired Nevermore. Blurring the lines between history, memory and imagination, Nevermore uses poetic text, expressive movement, haunting music and whimsical design to get under the skin of a man who remains an irresistible mystery.”

Alongside Christenson, the creative team includes production designer Bretta Gerecke, choreographer Laura Krewski, sound effects designer Wade Staples, sound designer Andrew Johnson and orchestrators Jonathan Christenson and Matthew Skopyk. The London casting is being overseen by Neil Rutherford, with further casting details expected to be announced in spring 2027.

Nevermore – The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe is booking now at Charing Cross Theatre from 19 July to 9 October 2027 and is produced by M. Killburg Reedy for MKR Entertainment Group Ltd, Martin Hummel, Rose Caiola from Caiola Productions, and Catalyst Theatre.
