Tom Chambers, Father Brown star and former Strictly Come Dancing champion, is set to join the first-ever stage adaptation of S J Watson’s bestselling psychological thriller, Before I Go To Sleep. Chambers will play Ben, the husband of Christine, played by Giovanna Fletcher, with the production starting its run at Richmond Theatre on 15 January 2027 before touring the UK and Ireland.
Best known for his television roles as Inspector 'Sullivan' in Father Brown, 'Sam Strachan' in Holby City and 'Max Tyler' in Waterloo Road. Chambers has also enjoyed an extensive career on stage, appearing in Top Hat, Crazy for You, Dial M for Murder and Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts, and winning the sixth series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2008.
Before I Go To Sleep follows Christine, a woman who appears to have an idyllic life, with one terrible exception. Every night, she loses the previous 20 years of her memories. Each morning, she wakes with no recollection. Not even her husband lying beside her. She must piece together her life as hidden and terrifying truths begin to emerge, forcing her to question everyone around her.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Giovanna in Before I Go To Sleep. It’s such a brilliantly unsettling story, and what I love about it is that you’re never quite sure who or what to believe.” Tom Chambers said. “Ben is a fascinating character to play, particularly in a story where memory and trust are so closely intertwined. I think Rachel has done a great job adapting the book into a stage play and I can’t wait to get into rehearsals and bring this extraordinary thriller to audiences around the country.”
Giovanna Fletcher, who also serves as Executive Producer on the production, welcomed Chambers to the cast, saying: “I’m so excited to have Tom joining the cast of Before I Go To Sleep as Christine’s husband, Ben. It’s such a gripping story and the relationship between Christine and Ben is right at the heart of it. It’s going to be a lot of fun working on those twists and turns in the rehearsal room and I think audiences are going to love seeing the action unfold on stage.”
Fletcher continues, “And as an extra bonus, I’m reunited with Rachel Wagstaff and Loveday Ingram who I worked with on The Girl on the Train. The dream team are back and now we get to welcome Tom into the fold.”
The forthcoming stage production coincides with the publication of Watson’s long-awaited sequel, Before I Sleep Forever, due to be released in May 2027 while the stage production is touring across UK and Ireland.
“It’s wonderful to see Before I Go To Sleep finding a new life on stage.” S J Watson said. “When I first wrote Christine’s story, I could never have imagined the journey it would take, or that I would be returning to her world all these years later. Theatre offers such an exciting way to explore the uncertainty and suspense at the heart of the novel, and I’m delighted that Giovanna and Tom will be bringing these characters to life for audience across the UK. With the sequel arriving next year too, it’s a particularly exciting time for Christine’s story.”
Adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff and directed by Loveday Ingram, the production reunites the creative team behind the stage adaption of The Girl on the Train, which also starred Fletcher. The creative team includes costume and video designer Justin Nardella, lighting designer Jason Taylor, sound designer Gareth Fry and producer Josh Andrews, with further casting announcements to follow.
Before I Go to Sleep opens at Richmond Theatre on 15 January 2027 before touring the UK and Ireland, concluding at Leeds Grand Theatre on 26 June. Giovanna Fletcher will appear at all venues, while Tom Chambers is scheduled to appear up to and including the production’s engagement at Sheffield Lyceum Theatre, from 30 March to 3 April 2027.
