Five ways to enjoy a spa day for less, according to an expert

A spa day is often associated with luxury hotels, lengthy treatments and hefty price tags, but enjoying a little downtime doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. With the right package, a bit of flexibility and some careful planning, it’s possible to enjoy everything from a relaxing massage to a dip in the pool without committing to an overnight stay.

Cheryl Corns, Wowcher’s spa expert, shares five ways to make a spa visit more affordable, without compromising on the experience.

“Start with what you’d most enjoy from your visit,” says Cheryl. “A massage, a swim and some time in the sauna might be exactly what you’re looking for. You don’t necessarily need a long treatment or an overnight stay to make it feel like a treat.

“The key is to compare the whole experience—what treatment you get, which facilities you can use and how much time you have there—so you choose something that works for you.”

    1. Compare days and times before booking

When it comes to finding a more affordable spa day, timing can make all the difference. Rather than automatically opting for a weekend visit, compare prices across different days of the week and look at afternoon or twilight packages, which may offer better value.

“If you can be flexible about when you visit, look at a few different options before booking. An afternoon or evening package may give you the experience you want at a lower price. Check the eligible days and times so you can plan your visit around the offer,” says Cheryl.

    2. Pair a shorter treatment with spa access

You don’t necessarily need to book an hour-long massage or an extensive treatment menu to make a spa day worthwhile. A 25- or 30-minute facial or massage, combined with access to facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna or steam room, can offer a more affordable way to enjoy a few hours of relaxation.

“A 25- or 30-minute facial or massage can be the centrepiece of your visit, with time in the facilities before or afterwards. Compare the treatment length alongside the facilities access—you may find that a shorter treatment package gives you everything you wanted from your day,” Cheryl explains.

    3. Focus on the experiences you’ll actually enjoy

Spa packages can include everything from multiple treatments to refreshments and additional extras, but a longer list of inclusions doesn’t always mean better value. Before booking, think about what you want from the day and prioritise packages that match those preferences.

“If your ideal visit is a massage followed by a quiet swim, use that as your starting point. A bigger package isn’t automatically better value if it includes things you wouldn’t otherwise choose. Spend your budget on the parts you’ll enjoy most,” says Cheryl.

    4. Look for packages that include food and drink

If you’re planning to make a day of your spa visit, it’s worth comparing packages that include lunch or afternoon tea with the cost of booking these separately. As well as potentially saving money, having refreshments included can make a shorter visit feel like a more complete occasion.

“Compare the package price with booking the spa experience and food separately. If you already wanted both, bringing them together can offer good value and make the visit feel like more of an occasion,” Cheryl advises.

    5. Find a spa closer to home

A relaxing escape doesn’t have to involve a long journey or an expensive hotel stay. Local day spas and hotel spas can provide an opportunity to switch off for a few hours, without the additional cost of accommodation, travel and overnight extras.

“You don’t have to travel far or stay overnight to enjoy a little luxury. Look at spas within easy travelling distance—you could enjoy a treatment and time in the facilities while keeping more of your budget for the experience itself,” says Cheryl.

    Affordable spa experiences to try

For those looking to put these tips into practice, Wowcher advertises a range of spa packages across the UK, including options that combine treatments, facilities access and refreshments.

As Cheryl concludes: “Luxury for less is about finding an experience you’ll enjoy at a price you’re comfortable with. A little flexibility and a clear idea of what you want can help you make the most of your spa budget.”
