London Philharmonic Orchestra unveils free sound gallery in Vinegar Yard, London, SE1

The London Philharmonic Orchestra unveils The Power of Listening at Vinegar Yard, SE1, with a free public sound gallery where Londoners can put on headphones, listen to music performed by the Orchestra and see the artwork it inspired.

WHEN:  Vinegar Yard installation 21st – 28th September.  Free.

Created in partnership with the Royal College of Art and Graphic Designer Neville Brody (the man behind concert posters for The Human League and Art Director for 80’s cult magazine The Face), eight postgraduate artists have each responded visually to a different piece of music from the Orchestra’s approaching new season, turning the invisible emotional impact of music into something you can see: from getting the heart racing to helping the day melt away. The artworks will also appear on billboards around London.

The installation launches the Orchestra’s first full season under Artistic Director Jesús Herrera, whose new long-term vision explores the idea of “deep listening” in an increasingly distracted and divided world.

Jesús Herrera, Artistic Director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra said:

"Listening is often thought of as something we do passively, but music can have a profound effect on how we feel and what we imagine. By bringing together the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal College of Art, we wanted to make that invisible experience visible - and show people that you don't need to be an expert in classical music to have a powerful response to it."
