Recognisable by its vibrant purple petals, Echinacea purpurea - commonly known as the purple coneflower - is far more than just a garden favourite. It is one of the world's most extensively researched medicinal plants, with a growing body of scientific evidence supporting its role in immune health, and World Echinacea Day aims to raise awareness of the science behind this extraordinary plant.

Recent evidence from the ERA-PRIMA meta-analysis, one of the largest reviews of Echinacea research to date, found that Echinacea purpurea is associated with:

    • 32% fewer respiratory tract infections

    • 40% fewer recurrent infections

    • 56% fewer respiratory complications

    • 40% fewer antibiotic prescriptions

    • 80% fewer antibiotic treatment days for those who did require antibiotics

These findings have important implications, not only for individual health but also for global efforts to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and tackle antimicrobial resistance.

Earlier studies also demonstrated impressive antiviral activity, reporting that Echinacea reduced the risk of respiratory viral infections by 51%, lowered the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection by 63%, and reduced viral load by up to 99% in those who became infected.

Crucially, no resistance has ever been developed against it by respiratory tract viruses. Now, what other plant can boast all of that?

Whether you're already a fan of Echinacea or discovering it for the first time, World Echinacea Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate one of nature's most remarkable plants, a celebration that’s supported by pharmacies and health stores across the country.
