Tower Hamlets has reduced fall-related hospital admissions for those aged 65 and over by 23.4% over the last year, a new report reveals.

The London borough ranks third in the country for the biggest reduction in preventable falls, with Wirral and Stoke-on-Trent taking second and first position.

Tower Hamlets, Havering and Croydon lead London’s reductions: Havering – down 21.5%, the fifth-largest reduction in England and Croydon – down 20.3%, seventh nationally, and down 42.2% over the decade.

The Accidental Falls Report, published by mobility bathroom specialists Age Care Bathrooms, analyses Department of Health and Social Care data to highlight where support is needed most across the UK before the winter months.

More than 600 people aged 65 and over are admitted to hospital after a fall in England every day. That totalled 221,600 admissions in 2024/25.

Sam Davies, Director of Age Care Bathrooms, says:

“Most homes in this country historically haven’t been built with accessibility in mind. While that’s changing, we often see people living in homes which haven’t developed to align with changing accessibility needs.

“People want to stay in the homes that hold their memories and is close to familiar neighbours. Very often, adapting a home to how someone actually lives in it is what makes staying possible. That's why planning ahead matters - and the same goes for health and lifestyle. The best time to start is today.

“There’s good support out there for home and lifestyle, though unfortunately the availability of falls prevention services can vary depending on where you live. Whether looking for exercise classes, falls prevention advice, or a consultation from your GP, even small actions will go a long way to help you stay confident on your feet.”
