Last night, Vegemite transformed Clapham's The Railway pub into a celebration of British and Australian humour, bringing together comedy fans for its one-night-only Spread the Laughs event. Hosted by the brilliantly sharp Ray Badran and headlined by the ferociously funny Felicity Ward, guests were taken on an intercontinental comedy journey between Britain and Australia.
Backed by standout sets from Peter Jones, Will Owen, and Alexandra Haddow, the audience was treated to a night filled with good-natured banter and plenty of Australian-British teasing, proving that although the two nations are separated by thousands of miles, they're never far apart when it comes to a shared sense of humour.
Toasties, Banter, and Standout Sets in Clapham
Alongside the show, guests tucked into Vegemite and cheese toasties fresh from the toastie station, marvelled at the towering Great Pyramid of Vegemite, and snapped photos with a giant Vegemite jar that was almost as big as the laughs it inspired.
The night follows research from Vegemite, which highlights that although Australia and Britain have inherent differences, humour stands out as the ultimate bridge between the two cultures.
Robin Lewis, Marketing Manager at Vegemite (Euro Food Brands), said: “Spread the Laughs was all about bringing people together through humour and celebrating the unique connection between Britain and Australia. It was fantastic to see so many people come along, enjoy the comedy and experience first-hand how much our two cultures have in common when it comes to laughter."
Bridging Two Cultures Through Shared Sarcasm
While nearly half of Brits (47%) say sarcasm best defines British humour, more than a quarter (27%) also associate the trait with Australian humour. The findings suggest the two nations' humour traits are more alike than many might think.
The research also highlights that, despite regional rivalries and differing opinions on who is funniest, Brits share many of the same comedic tastes. In fact, more than one in five (21%) say innuendo is their favourite guilty pleasure when it comes to humour.
The sold-out event saw comedy fans gather from across London to celebrate the humour that connects Britain and Australia, with laughter proving to be common ground between the two nations.
Vegemite's Spread the Laughs event brought the findings to life, demonstrating that despite their differences, Britons and Australians share many of the same comedic traits and a mutual appreciation for humour. For more information, recipes, and product inspiration, visit Vegemite.
