A ‘Compleat’ Gastronomical Extravaganza in Marlow
Grab your napkins, tighten your waistbands, and prepare to salivate – because I’m about to tell you about an experience that can only be described as tantalisingly transcendent. Nestled in the charming Georgian town of Marlow, on the outskirts of London, stands the triumphant culinary castle known as The Compleat Angler Hotel. Imagine if Disney decided to make a movie about a hotel for foodies; this would be it!
Now, here’s a secret, if you ever score an exclusive invitation to the Chef’s Table event in the Riverside Restaurant, you’d best believe you’re in for an unforgettable feast! Helmed by the culinary sorcerer, Shaun Singh, the place boasts a new seasonal menu that’s akin to the “who’s who” of the gastronomical world.
Perched proudly on the edge of the River Thames, the Riverside Restaurant has a dining room that’s so close to the water that I half-expected to be served by a gaggle of synchronized swimming waiters! And the views? They’re so iconic that even Monet would trade his lilies for a chance to paint them.
Let’s talk food. The tasting menu kicks off with freshly baked bread and butter, so good you’d want to write sonnets about it.The Lobster and Crayfish Cocktail with Flying Fish Caviar graces your plate like a piece of abstract art – almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. Dressed with Pickled Lemon and Melba Toast, I’ve got to admit, my taste buds fell head over heels in love with the lobster.

Now, I’m not usually one for the Whipped Truffle Goat Cheese, but boy, this dish could make a beetroot fan out of anyone. You can literally taste Chef Singh’s devotion to his craft in each mouthful. The Pickled Onion, Pea Shoots, and Pine Nut danced a waltz in my mouth that was more breathtaking than any episode of Dancing With The Stars.
The main course is where the magic really happens. The Rack of Lamb served with Olive Oil Mashed Potato and Seasonal Greens is cooked so perfectly, I think even the lamb would have approved.
Then there’s the Spiced Monkfish and Raw Mango Curry – if you’re a heat seeker, this dish is your culinary soulmate. The tangy curry sings the song of the tropics, while the monkfish conducts the melody with the finesse of a maestro.
Don’t even get me started on the desserts. The Buttermilk Panna Cotta is like eating a cloud from the Candy Kingdom – fluffy, sweet, and heavenly. And the Opera Gateaux with Caramel Sauce and Strawberry Ice Cream – it’s like the Pavarotti of pastries; grand, complex, and leaving you on a high note.

If you’re contemplating prolonging your culinary escapade into an overnight delight, then the Compleat Angler has you covered. I heartily recommend securing a room there. With breathtaking views of the River Thames that soothe the soul like a warm bath on a brisk day, it’s the epitome of relaxation.

Mornings at the Compleat Angler unfold as if from a storybook. Imagine waking up to the sight of the Thames flowing gently by, coupled with the melodious serenade of chirping birds. The breakfast offerings here could outshine even the most extravagant Hobbit brunch. My personal champion? The scrambled eggs with avocado and smoked salmon. Add to this a plethora of options ranging from cereal to the irresistibly aromatic, freshly baked pain aux chocolate. Oh, and let me tell you, those pain aux chocolates are the stuff of legends!

At the helm of this extraordinary establishment are the Compleat Angler’s General Manager, John Willcock, and Food & Beverage Manager, Vincenzo Di Monda. Willcock brims with pride for the hotel and dedicates his efforts to ensure each guest’s experience is nothing short of spectacular. A true innovator, he’s always seeking ways to elevate the hotel experience.
Vincenzo Di Monda, on the other hand, is the maestro of tranquility and hilarity. His calm demeanor and amusing jokes make each meal an effortless and enjoyable experience.
To wrap things up, The Compleat Angler Hotel doesn’t just offer a mouthwatering seasonal menu, it presents a culinary journey that takes ‘eating out’ to a whole new level.
