Applications for social enterprise funding competition IGNITE have quadrupled as diverse young entrepreneurs from across the UK seek investment to help ease societal problems.

With the Ford Family Foundation initiative now in its third year, a quarter of this year’s record 297 entries are from outside university pathways after applications were opened up beyond start-ups emerging from higher education. This year’s live pitching and networking event will take place in Canary Wharf in November, following a six-week IGNITE accelerator. Philanthropist and entrepreneur Tony Ford has offered six-figure follow-on investments to several previous finalists and winners, whose growing and sustainable businesses are changing lives for the better.

The surge in entries demonstrates a powerful appetite from founders typically underserved by investment markets, with 41% of this year’s cohort being from low-income backgrounds or first-generation university students, a third being disabled or neurodiverse-led, and a quarter being women from an ethnic minority. More than half of the social entrepreneurs who applied for IGNITE investment this year are based outside of London.

Accelerator Programme and Diverse Founder Representation

Carefully selected semi-finalists are currently benefiting from a six-week social venture programme, delivered by Cambio Consultancy and supported by Barclays Eagle Labs. Of the 16 social enterprises taking part in the accelerator, 11 are striving to initiate change in the Health & Wellbeing or Education & Skills sectors, with social care and SEND support being the standout themes. Almost half of the semi-finalists are students emerging from universities, including Birmingham, Durham, Oxford, Plymouth, Strathclyde, the Royal College of Art and UCL.

Peter Ptashko FRSA, Founder & CEO of Cambio Consultancy, commented: “We’re mentoring an impressive range of driven, innovative founders who are on a mission to help change lives. Their businesses are at different stages, which was a deliberate selection strategy to enable them to learn from each other as well as from us. We’re working through online modules covering customers, value, market, business model, marketing, finance and pitching. In October we’ll all come together for an in-person session on storytelling and pitch presentation, after which the six finalists will be chosen. It’s a privilege to support these talented changemakers in shaping, strengthening and scaling their ideas into investment-ready ventures.”

Live Canary Wharf Pitching Finale and £50,000 Prize

Following the accelerator the top six finalists, selected by a panel of distinguished judges, will pitch live to win a £50,000 equity-free prize at the flagship IGNITE competition finale at Barclays' Canary Wharf headquarters on 12th November. All 16 semi-finalists will be given a demonstration space to showcase their ventures to an influential audience of 150 investors, industry leaders and inspiring entrepreneurs.
