Passing your Class 1 or Class 2 test is a big moment. Then comes the catch: so many adverts ask for two years' experience. How are you meant to get experience if nobody will give you a start?
Jobs that welcome new drivers
HGV Job Alerts has a dedicated section for roles that accept newly qualified drivers, with no prior experience needed. They're highlighted on the homepage and each city has its own new-driver page, such as new driver HGV jobs in London, Birmingham or Manchester.
Tips for landing your first HGV job
- Be flexible on shifts. Nights and weekends are often where first starts are.
- Consider agencies. Agency work can build hours and references quickly.
- Start on rigids or multi-drop. Class 2 and delivery rounds can be an easier way in.
- Have your paperwork ready. Licence, Driver CPC card, tacho card and a short CV.
- Check the company first. Drivers can upvote or downvote employers on the employers and agencies page.
