HGV Academy launches free tachograph simulator to help new lorry drivers learn faster

Ask almost any newly qualified lorry driver what worried them most about their first week on the road, and the digital tachograph comes up again and again. Getting a manual entry wrong can mean an awkward conversation with a transport manager or, worse, a fine at a roadside check.

HGV Academy, the UK licence training provider, has now built a free tachograph simulator that lets drivers practise on screen, at home, as many times as they like - with no sign-up and no charge.

Practise before you're in the cab

The simulator recreates the buttons and screens of a digital tachograph unit. Drivers insert a virtual card into slot 1, follow the prompts, and work through the entries they will face in real life: logging a daily rest, recording work done away from the truck, and choosing the right activity symbols.

Alongside it, a step-by-step manual entry guide explains the basics that trip people up - such as inserting the card chip side up and chip end first, with the photo facing down, and why you make a manual entry every time your card has been out of the unit.

Why it matters

Tachograph rules are strict and the equipment is not intuitive the first time. Instructors say many new drivers only see a unit briefly during training, then are expected to use it confidently on day one of a new job. A free simulator closes that gap.

You shouldn't have to learn how to use a tachograph for the first time during your first job interview. Too many driving schools don't give the full training.
