From New HGV Driver to Building a 1,000-Strong Community: The Story Behind HGVMETA
A London-based agency HGV driver has turned his own experience of entering the haulage industry into an online community designed to help drivers navigate life on the road.

For many people becoming an HGV driver, passing the test is only the beginning.
Finding that first job, understanding how different companies operate, preparing for assessments, knowing what equipment to carry when tramping and having someone to ask when something goes wrong can all be challenging, particularly for newly qualified drivers.
It was from this experience that HGVMETA began building an online community for HGV drivers.
Who is HGVMETA?
HGVMETA is the online name used by a London-based HGV driver who began his driving career in 2023 and passed his HGV test in February 2024.
After entering the industry, HGVMETA experienced first hand some of the challenges that new drivers can face when trying to establish themselves in the haulage industry.
Rather than keeping his experiences to himself, he began sharing information online and creating a community where other drivers could ask questions and learn from people already working in the industry.
His experience as a relatively new driver is an important part of the community. The aim is to give other drivers a place where they can speak to people who understand what it is like to start an HGV career.
A Discord community for HGV drivers
The centre of the community is a Discord server, which is free to use.
The server has grown to more than 1,000 drivers, with both newly qualified and experienced HGV drivers taking part.
Because drivers work different shifts, the community is active around the clock. This means someone finishing a night shift, preparing for their first agency assignment or getting ready for an assessment can ask questions and potentially receive advice from other drivers.
The idea is simple: drivers helping drivers whenever they need it.
Helping new drivers get started
One of the biggest challenges for newly qualified HGV drivers can be finding their first job.
Having an HGV licence doesn't necessarily mean knowing which companies are recruiting, what agencies are looking for or what to expect when attending an assessment.
The community includes a job bot, which helps members browse HGV vacancies and look for opportunities in their local area.
This gives drivers another way to discover potential work without having to search through numerous sources themselves.
More than just finding jobs
The community isn't only about employment.
Drivers can discuss different aspects of HGV life, including tramping, assessments, equipment, different types of driving work and experiences with companies.
For example, someone considering their first tramping job can ask experienced drivers what equipment they should take and what they should expect.
Drivers preparing for an assessment can also ask other members about their experiences and get practical advice before attending.
The community provides peer-to-peer information from people who are actually working in the industry.
Traffic updates and life on the road
The Discord server also includes traffic updates, allowing drivers to share information about congestion, incidents and delays.
For drivers travelling across the UK every day, information from other drivers can be useful when planning journeys and dealing with unexpected delays.
Instead of being completely isolated in their cabs, drivers have a place where they can communicate with other people working on the road.
Building connections between drivers
Another major part of the community is networking.
A driver might join the server looking for an answer to a simple question but end up meeting other drivers who could provide advice, experience or information about potential job opportunities.
Members work for different companies and across different areas, creating a network of drivers who can share their experiences.
For new drivers in particular, making these connections can help them become more familiar with the industry.
From driver to community builder
HGVMETA's work has expanded beyond the Discord server, with resources also available through his website covering areas such as HGV licences, training, job opportunities and driver support.
The community has continued to grow from its original purpose of helping drivers communicate and exchange information.
With more than 1,000 drivers involved, it has become a place where people can ask questions, find job opportunities, share traffic information and meet others working in the haulage industry.
For someone who has recently passed their HGV test and is asking "What do I do now?", the community provides a free place to start asking questions and connecting with other drivers.
Want to join the community?
Drivers interested in HGVMETA and the HGV driver community can find more information through the HGVMETA website and Discord server.
The community is free to join and provides drivers with access to other HGV professionals, job opportunities, traffic updates and practical advice from people working in the industry.
