Historic apartment with river views set within iconic South London mill

Occupying a prominent position on the fourth floor of one of London’s most unique riverside warehouse conversions, Vogans Mill Wharf, is a characterful two-bedroom apartment, which retains the original feature and charm of the former Victorian grain mill. On the market for £1.15 million, with prime London agents Anderson Rose, the charming property benefits from large open-plan living spaces, a private balcony and views directly onto the water.

Vogans Mill Wharf is a striking dockside development that dates back to the Victoria era and takes its names from the benefactor of a wider complex that was first established on the banks of the River Thames in the 16th century. In 1554, the parish of Bermondsey Abbey had a significant mill at the mouth of Neckinger River, an estuary of the River Thames, which was expanded into a major production complex, with mills, warehouses, breweries, factories and silos by James Vogan in the 19th century.

Vogans Mill Wharf ground grain and exotic spices directly from ships docked by Tower Bridge that arrived from the East and West Indies. As well as a concrete silo, there was a pea-splitting mill and a pearl barley mill connected to the building, creating mass employment for the local area, whilst playing a key role in the strength of London’s position as a leading global city for trade and production.

The wharf was eventually closed in 1987 when operations were moved out of the city and the mill was converted to housing, with Squire & Partners completing the designs for the sensitive restoration.

Jon Byers, Founder of Anderson Rose, commented: “In recent years London has become known for its eye-catching modern buildings and developments, however, this is a city that has always traded on its history and character and you won’t find many more characterful homes than here. Vogans Mill Wharf has retained its Victorian charm and perfectly blends original industrial features with modern fixtures and fittings that make this the perfect place to live. There is also the benefit of private outside space and views directly onto the water.”

Upon entering the apartment, you are met with a spacious hallway featuring solid wood floors, seamlessly leading onto the master en-suite bedroom. This principal bedroom includes plantation shutters that open onto views of the dock, while the second en-suite double bedroom has access to a private balcony exclusively overlooking the water. Both bedrooms are cleverly configured, showcasing excellent built-in storage as well as handmade bespoke wardrobes, each ensuite also comes with top of the range baths and showers.

The centrepiece to this property is a sweeping open-plan reception room, which is accessed through a sleek and attractive set of double-glazed doors. This expansive area comprises a stylish custom-built kitchen featuring modern integrated appliances, an inviting dining area and a relaxing living/entertainment section for residents to unwind. This stunning and historic space is set against striking bare brick walks and prominent wooden pillars, kept from the warehouse’s original composition.

Vogans Mill Wharf is located Mill Street, situated on the east-side of Shad Thames, nearby plenty of popular shops, gyms, cafes and restaurants that line the Thames waterfront. Fantastic transport links such as London Bridge and Bermondsey stations are within walking distance, offering a swift Jubilee Line service into other areas of central London.

This grand two-bedroom apartment within Vogans Mill Wharf is available for £1.15 million. Viewings are strictly by appointment only, for further sales information, contact Anderson Rose on 020 3324 0188 or visit www.andersonrose.co.uk
