When Was The Last Time You Cleaned Your Fridge? Cleaning Expert Reveals How Often You Really Need to Clean It

Spring is officially here, and with it comes the inevitable spring cleaning. But there is one appliance that should get more cleaning than we give it. The refrigerator.

How often do you actually need to clean it? Peter Hansen, Co-Owner at Sparrow Estate Mgmt reveals the best schedule to follow to clean your fridge and how often to ensure it stays clean and runs properly all year round.

Bi-Weekly Scrub Downs

Just because your fridge doesn’t smell doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be cleaned. This misconception can lead to overlooked nooks and crannies where bacteria and mould thrive, affecting food quality and safety.

“Remove all items from your fridge every other week (checking expiration dates as you go) and give the interior a thorough cleaning. Make sure you pay attention to drawers and shelves where spills often accumulate,” suggests Peter.

Burn Freezer Ice Every 90 Days

Don’t worry. This doesn’t involve actually burning anything. Instead, you defrost your freezer to prevent ice buildup, which can affect your appliance’s efficiency.

“To burn the ice, turn off the fridge, remove all items, and let the ice melt naturally. Give the freezer a good cleaning, then return all items for a perfectly maintained freezer all year round,” comments Peter.

Inspect & Clean Seals Each Month

Did you know that the seals around your refrigerator doors hide food particles and mould?

“The seals are often overlooked, but they should really be cleaned each month with a soft brush and a mixture of water and vinegar to keep the doors sealing correctly. This helps your fridge seal properly, keeping your food fresh and preventing any issues with your fridge,” advises Peter.

Deep-Clean Coils & Vents Each Quarter

While your food might not touch this area, dust, and pet hair can accumulate on your fridge’s coils and vents, making it work harder than needed.

“A coil brush and a vacuum should be used to clean these areas deep every three months. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent damage,” says Peter.

Review Fridge Organization & Storage Practices Yearly

Once a year, take the time to reassess how you organise your fridge. Keeping it well-organised will make cleaning easier and improve air circulation and appliance efficiency.

“Consider the items best suited for different sections and drawers based on temperature and humidity levels,” comments Peter.

Remember, a clean fridge is a cornerstone of a healthy kitchen. So, embrace these practices and make fridge maintenance a regular home care routine.
