Soak Up the London Sun on International Picnic Day

The sun is out, the skies are clear and today is International Picnic Day, the perfect excuse to swap your desk for a picnic blanket and spend the afternoon lounging in one of London’s lovely green spaces. Party and events experts, The Brighton Bucket List, explain how to get the most out of this fun day.

A Quick Look at the Origins

International Picnic Day, celebrated every 18 June, may not be the most formal date on the calendar, but it is definitely one of the most fun. The idea of a picnic goes back centuries, with the word pique-nique first used in France in the 1600s to describe social meals where everyone brought something along to share. The tradition took off across Europe in the 1800s, when public parks and country outings became popular with families and friends wanting a taste of the outdoors.

Today, the spirit remains the same: good company, good food and the great outdoors. And with today’s glorious weather, there’s no better time to keep the tradition alive.

Where to Lay Your Picnic Blanket in London

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to picnic spots in London. If you want space to stretch out and a classic park vibe, try Regent’s Park or Hyde Park – both are full of beautiful corners perfect for a long, lazy lunch. Looking for a view? Head to Primrose Hill or Greenwich Park for stunning panoramic scenes of the city.

For a more peaceful afternoon, Hampstead Heath offers hidden glades and shady tree spots, or try the rose garden in Queen Mary’s Gardens in Regent’s Park for a touch of romance. If you are in South London, Brockwell Park or Dulwich Park are both excellent for a relaxed day out with room to wander.

    Picnic Food Made Easy

You do not need to be a gourmet chef to pack a winning picnic. Start with the classics: sandwiches, wraps, sausage rolls and cut-up fruit. Add a few extras like cheese and crackers, veggie sticks with hummus or a pasta salad and you have got a well-rounded spread. Sweet treats like cookies, flapjacks or berries are always a good idea.

Drinks are essential on a warm day, so bring plenty of water. You can also add a refreshing twist with sparkling elderflower, homemade iced tea or lemonade. A cool bag will keep everything fresh and a few reusable containers will help reduce waste and keep things tidy.

Packing Tips for a Smooth Picnic

Make sure to bring a decent-sized picnic rug, ideally one with a waterproof backing in case the grass is a bit damp. Reusable cutlery, plates and cups are practical and planet-friendly, and it is always smart to have napkins, wet wipes and a bin bag on hand.

If you are heading to one of London’s more popular parks, it is worth arriving early to grab a good spot. Shaded areas go quickly on sunny days.

Add a Bit of Extra Fun

Picnics are about more than just the food. Bring along a frisbee, a football or a game of cards to keep everyone entertained. A good book or playlist can help you unwind if you are going solo. If you are with kids, bring a magnifying glass and make a bug hunt part of the adventure.

You could even turn it into a themed picnic – bring along your favourite book and dress the part, or match your food to a colour or cuisine. There are no rules, just enjoyment.

    Make the Most of Today

With London glowing under the sunshine and the parks bursting with life, there is no better moment to celebrate International Picnic Day. Whether you are sharing snacks with a big group or enjoying a peaceful hour on your own, take a moment to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.

So pack your favourite treats, find a patch of grass and enjoy a little slice of joy in the heart of the city.
