London Wetland Centre’s popular Dawn Chorus is back on Saturday 19 April, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the reserve before daybreak.
The annual event gives everyone – from those with a passing interest in wildlife to keen birders – the chance to enjoy listening to the reserve’s visiting and resident birds as the sun rises over its reed beds, lakes and ponds.
One of London Wetland Centre’s experts will be on hand to guide visitors around the reserve, whilst helping them identify birds by their song as well as learn more about the wetland habitat and its wildlife.
This year, visitors will also be treated to breakfast at the end of the guided tour, plus receive admission to London Wetland Centre for the remainder of the day so they can enjoy some self-guided birdwatching and other daily activities happening at the reserve.
Alexia Hollinshead, General Manager at London Wetland Centre, commented: “You have to get up early to hear nature at its liveliest, most vocal and very best, but you’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
“When the first light begins to shine, a solo bird will begin to sing, awakening others to the dawn and soon London Wetland Centre is filled with the beautiful sound of birdsong as our wildlife celebrates the new day. It’s well worth setting your alarm early for.”
Alexia continued that visitors can expect to hear calls and birdsong from a range of different species at London Wetland Centre this time of year, with spring bringing with it an abundance of new wildlife.
Star bird species to spot this time of year include Chiffchaff, Sedge warbler, Cetti’s warbler, Sand martin and Black cap.
