BoTree’s plantable pencils for Conscious Luxury

The BoTree London is using Sprout pencils to communicate its sustainability commitments, replacing plastic pens with unique plantable pencils that grow into plants and flowers after use.

The luxury boutique hotel on Marylebone Lane now offers the pencils to all guests staying in one of its high end rooms or suites, as part of its dedication to Conscious Luxury. “The Sprout pencils are a small example of our continued commitment to this”, says Gemma Wise at The BoTree. “We want our guest to feel reassured that mindful choices have been made throughout the hotel.”

SproutWorld holds the global patent for writing instruments you can plant. The company was founded in 2013 by entrepreneur Michael Stausholm, and has sold over 80 million Sprout pencils so far – each one has a seed capsule attached and can grow into one of 14 different plants, including flowers, herbs, vegetables, or trees. The pencils offer an ecological alternative to the 135 million plastic ballpoint pens produced worldwide every day. Each pencil in the hotel offers a different plant or flower and is engraved with the words’ “Grow with The BoTree”.

“We have seen an increasing demand from hotels searching for hospitality gifts that reflect their values,” says Stausholm. “The Sprout pencils have received very positive feedback from our hotel clients. Guests remember to take them home and sometimes even send pictures of the sprouting pencils back to the hotel.”

Wise concludes: “The aim of The BoTree is to minimise its impact on the planet and create an environment in which its guests, team and community can connect, be inspired, and flourish. SproutWorld pencils are therefore a perfect fit for stationery within the hotel.

“Our guests can enjoy their stay knowing we have taken steps to reduce our impact on the planet. Creating a sense of connection is also at the root of everything we do, and we hope the flowers that grow from the pencils will serve as a reminder of The BoTree and what it stands for. The SproutWorld pencils make a great gift, which people can then enjoy watching blossom after being planted.”
