Property Expert Says You Can Boost Your Home Value 5% by Switch Up the Colours

Leading cash house buyers Good Move reveal that painting your home in light, bright colours can significantly increase your property value and appeal to potential buyers. Whether you’re ready to sell or just refreshing your home, the colours chosen can have an enormous impact on the value of your property.
According to Good Move, light and neutral tones such as soft whites, warm beige, and pastel shades can make rooms feel more spacious, modern, and inviting. These are all key factors that buyers prioritise when viewing a home. A study from Origin also showed that house-hunters will pay, on average, 5% less for a property with an unappealing colour scheme, with yellow being cited as the cheapest-looking colour.
Director at Good Move Nima Ghasri says, “First impressions count when it comes to selling your home, and the colour of your walls plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Light, bright shades not only enhance natural light but also create the illusion of space, which is a huge selling point to potential buyers.
Whilst personal taste will always come into play in anyone’s home, garish colours such as bright or hot pink, neon or citrus green, or even fuchsia are off-putting to buyers.”
    Beiges and Greys
Warm neutral colours can add value to your property because they help create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Rooms with neutral colours have a level of sophistication whilst leaving the option for buyers to still see themselves living there.
    Soft Whites
White is often noted as a safe colour to paint your home due to its clean look and the fact that it can make rooms look more spacious. However, off-whites and softer whites are more likely to make your home look more expensive than a pure white wash, which can yellow quickly. Soft and subtle tints will help your room look larger without looking clinical.
    Use Black sparingly
Whilst painting a room black can give a sense of sophistication, painting a whole room black can feel claustrophobic because it shrinks the room size. Black, by its very nature, absorbs light, so use it sparingly to accent rather than paint main rooms in your home.
One of the most important things to potential buyers is space. Light colours give the perception of space and make rooms appear larger and more open. Lighter colours can also help boost natural light.
Light colours are appealing because they help potential buyers envisage what they would do with the space due to the neutrality, rather than having to redecorate or modernise immediately.
Good Move has also looked at other ways to increase your property value in 2025 including open plan living, colours, and decluttering tips which are available here.
