From Trauma to Triumph: Why I Wrote My Book

In January 2023, while hiking with my husband in Alberta’s Rockies, I felt an unmistakable pull—a clear message that it was time to write my book. It wasn’t a decision made lightly. It was the culmination of decades of lived experience, deep healing, and a growing sense that my insights could serve a greater purpose. That moment of clarity came after years of holding back due to self-doubt and fear of judgment.

My book, From Trauma to Triumph and What Lies Between, isn’t just a recounting of my journey—it’s a guide for anyone looking to transform pain into purpose. It reflects my belief that greatness lies within all of us, often buried under unhealed trauma. By confronting our pain, we can uncover our true potential.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write a book. My work as a social worker—spanning over 30 years—kept me busy and fulfilled, yet it also exposed me to the depths of human suffering. Over time, I realized the stories of resilience I witnessed in others mirrored my own. I had faced challenges that tested my spirit but also discovered tools to overcome them.

The idea for this book wasn’t born from a desire to share my story alone. Instead, it came from a belief that my journey and lessons could offer a roadmap for others. The title had to encapsulate the journey from pain to healing and the messy, transformative middle—the part often left out when discussing overcoming adversity.

At 16, I reached a breaking point and tried to end my life. Thankfully, I survived that dark moment, but it was a wake-up call. While I didn’t immediately begin healing, that experience planted a seed—a belief that life could be different if I addressed the pain I was feeling.

Years later, through therapy, education, and self-reflection, I began peeling back the layers of trauma that had accumulated over the years. I realized that perfectionism, self-doubt, and fear of vulnerability weren’t flaws—they were survival mechanisms, forged in response to unresolved pain. Healing became a journey of self-discovery, a process of learning to embrace imperfection and live authentically.

Writing this book was an extension of my healing journey. At first, the idea of putting my story and lessons onto paper felt overwhelming. How could I be truthful without hurting the people I love? How much of my story was mine to tell, and how much belonged to others?

Ultimately, I realized that sharing my story with honesty and vulnerability was essential—not just for me, but for the readers I hoped to reach. I wanted the book to feel like a conversation between friends, one where I could say, “I’ve been there. I see you. And there’s a way forward.”

Writing became cathartic. With each chapter, I uncovered parts of myself I hadn’t fully acknowledged. I revisited painful moments but also reflected on how far I’d come. By the time the manuscript was complete, I felt lighter, as if sharing my story and strategies had lifted a weight I’d carried for too long.

At its core, From Trauma to Triumph and What Lies Between is a message of hope. It’s about acknowledging the messy, nonlinear nature of healing and recognizing that it’s okay to struggle. Healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about integrating it into a new narrative.

The triumph I speak of isn’t about reaching perfection. It’s about finding peace in the process, embracing vulnerability, and stepping into your greatness despite the scars. My journey taught me that our most painful experiences often hold the key to our greatest growth. By leaning into discomfort, we discover resilience, strength, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals through some of their darkest moments. Whether as a social worker, trainer, or coach, I’ve seen the power of human resilience firsthand. I’ve witnessed people rise from the ashes of trauma to build meaningful lives. I believe, wholeheartedly, that this transformation is possible for anyone willing to take the first step.

One of my deepest intentions with this book is to empower readers to embark on their own healing journeys. I want them to see they’re not alone, their struggles don’t define them, and there’s a path to a brighter, more authentic life. Through personal stories, practical insights, and compassion, I hope to provide readers with tools to move forward.

The publication of From Trauma to Triumph and What Lies Between is just the beginning. My work as a speaker, trainer, and coach extends the book’s message. Whether delivering a talk on resilience, facilitating a workshop on trauma-informed care, or coaching women through life transitions, my goal is always the same: to help people unlock their greatness.

Healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in connection with others. That’s why I’m committed to fostering spaces where people can share their stories, support one another, and learn the skills they need to thrive. Whether through a Mental Health First Aid course, a coaching session, or a speaking engagement, I’m passionate about helping others see the possibilities within themselves.

The response to my book has been overwhelming. From reaching #2 on Amazon shortly after its release to hearing feedback like, “It felt like you were speaking directly to me,” I’ve been reminded of the power of sharing our stories. Winning the ‘Most Ready for the Professional Stage’ award after delivering my signature talk further affirmed I’m on the right path.

But the real triumph isn’t in accolades or sales—it’s in the connections I’ve made. Every time someone tells me that my book helped them feel seen, gave them hope, or inspired them to take action, I know that writing it was worth every moment of doubt and effort.

Writing From Trauma to Triumph and What Lies Between was a leap of faith. It required vulnerability, courage, and belief in the power of sharing lessons. My hope is that this book serves as a beacon for anyone stuck in their pain. Healing is possible. Transformation is possible. And greatness lies within you, waiting to be unleashed.
