Recent research has unveiled the most relaxed areas in England. According to a recent study, Dartford in Kent has been crowned England’s most relaxed area based on the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Health Index. This comprehensive analysis evaluated 307 local authorities across the country, focusing on three key factors: feelings of anxiety, general happiness, and life satisfaction.

Dartford topped the list with impressive survey results. Respondents reported an average anxiety score of just 1.7 out of 10, indicating minimal feelings of stress.

Furthermore, their average scores for general happiness and life satisfaction were 7.93 and 8.05, respectively. When these factors were combined, Dartford achieved an outstanding relaxation score of 9.79.

Following closely in second place is Surrey Heath, which recorded an average anxiety score of 1.91. Respondents in this area reported an average happiness score of 7.82 and life satisfaction of 8.01, resulting in a solid relaxation score of 9.36.

Hambleton, a charming area in Lancashire, secured third place with an average anxiety score of 2.17. Its residents reported higher levels of happiness (8.05) and life satisfaction (8.09), earning a relaxation score of 9.13.

Richmondshire in North Yorkshire came in fourth, with an average anxiety score of 2.22, happiness score of 7.99, and life satisfaction score of 8.16, achieving a relaxation score of 9.08.

Rounding out the top five is the picturesque Devon area of Torridge, which recorded an anxiety score of 2.4, alongside happiness (8.16) and life satisfaction scores (8.25) that contributed to a relaxation score of 8.99.

In stark contrast, Norwich was identified as the most stressed area in England, with residents reporting an average anxiety score of 4.04. Their happiness and life satisfaction scores were notably lower, at 6.88 and 7.5, respectively. This resulted in a considerably low relaxation score, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals living in this city.

The data, derived from the ONS Health Index, is crucial for understanding the emotional landscape of different local authorities.

A spokesperson emphasized the importance of surveys in gauging the mental health and happiness of different regions: “When it comes to measuring happiness or general mental health in a certain area or group of people, surveys are usually the best way forward. This case shows us an interesting contrast between certain areas in the country based on how residents feel. As new editions of this data and similar studies get released, it will be worth noting whether the same areas sit at the top and bottom.”

While Dartford stands out as a model of relaxation, the stress levels reported in Norwich underscore the challenges that some areas face. This research not only highlights the importance of mental well-being but also serves as a reminder of the diversity of experiences across the country.

As communities strive for improved quality of life, it will be interesting to see how these rankings evolve over time.
